To Be Married In Alberta

For the purposes of applying for an Alberta marriage licence, a couple will need to provide the following:

• Personal information (eg. full legal given names and last name, marital status, place of birth, date of birth, etc.).
• For purposes of completing your legal marriage registration you will also be asked to provide information on your parents (eg. legal given names and last name (including mother’s maiden name) and their places of birth.
• If either of the parties to this marriage current marital status is divorce, you will be required to provide copies of the final Certificate of Divorce or a Divorce Decree along with the information sheet.

We request you complete the information sheet and forward it to our office in advance of purchasing the licence IF you are choosing to purchase the license from The Banff Registry. This will allow time for our office to proof the information and ensure you have everything required to obtain a marriage licence.

Both parties of the marriage must attend the same registry office (together or independently) to purchase the marriage license.

Each must present Primary ID* and be fluent in English or bring someone who can translate for them. The person translating will have to sign an Affidavit of Interpreter which is submitted along with the marriage licence affidavit to Service Alberta.

The marriage license is valid immediately upon issuance and is valid for 3 months. The marriage can take place at any location within Alberta.

Ceremonies in Alberta can be officiated by either an authorized religious representative or an appointed marriage commissioner. A marriage officiate must be lawfully registered or appointed and hold a certificate of registration from Vital Statistics, Service Alberta. A marriage commissioner performs a civil ceremony without any specific religious affiliations.

PRIMARY ID – Every person who applies for an Alberta Marriage Licence must provide acceptable primary Marriage Licence ID.

• The identification document provided must be an original (photocopies and faxes are not acceptable).
• Government ID that contains a picture/photo of the person, the person’s full name (first and last), a distinct identification number.
• Identification that expires must be valid at the time it is provided.
• Identification that does not expire must have been issued within the last 5 years.
