Alberta Photo Identification Card
An Alberta photo identification card (ID card) is available to Alberta residents who do not or cannot hold a valid Alberta operator’s licence.
An Alberta Identification Card (ID card) is available to Alberta residents who do not have, or are unable to hold, a valid Alberta driver’s licence. The card is issued for identification purposes only and does not permit the cardholder to operate a motor vehicle under any circumstances.
The minimum age to apply for an ID card is 12 years old. Applicants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who can provide consent. An ID card is valid for five years from the date of issue.

ID Requirements
Under the Age of 18
- Parental consent: presence and ID of the mother, father or legal guardian (must see legal papers if guardian)
- ID for the youth: passport, birth certificate or other proof of status in Canada (permanent resident card or citizenship card)
Over the Age of 18
- Valid Photo ID
- Proof of full name and date of birth
- Legal status in Canada
- Alberta Health Care Card
- Proof of Alberta address dated in last 90 days
