If you are single, you can complete an application form on your own. If you are married or living common-law, you must apply together with your spouse or partner, unless they do not live in Alberta with you.

If you already have Alberta health-care coverage and need to add family members who have recently moved to Alberta, you will need to complete an Addition form.

If you are coming from another country then you are eligible for Alberta Health Care as of the date you enter Alberta.

If you are arriving from another province you are eligible 90 days from the day you enter Alberta. You may use the health care number from your previous province during the 90 day waiting period. In some cases you may have to pay for your medical services and send the receipts to your previous province for reimbursement.

*If you are not eligible right now you may still apply before the 90 days, you will not receive your card until your eligibility date

Every Albertan needs three things to apply for Alberta Health Care:

1. Identity (Photo Identification)

Examples include:

• Valid Passport
• Canadian Citizenship Card
• Permanent Resident Card
• Provincial Driver’s License/Identification Card

2. Alberta Residency

Examples include:

• Current Alberta driver’s licence or Identification card
• Current utility, banking or phone bill
• Mortgage or rent/lease agreement
• Letter of Employment

3. Citizenship/Status in Canada

Examples include:

• Canadian Passport
• Canadian Citizenship Card/Certificate
• Canadian Birth Certificate
• Permanent Resident Card
• Entry Document (Work/Study/Visitor Permit)
• Notice of Decision (Convention Refugee)

Services such as visiting a physician or psychiatrist, or diagnostic services are a few examples of what the AHCIP covers.

There are some services that are partially covered such as eye exams for minors (under 18) or seniors (over 65). Things that are not covered; cosmetic surgery or routine dental care.

Please note that International Experience Canada (IEC) visa holders must submit an official proof of employment document. The document must meet the following criteria:

• Recency: Issued within the past 30 days.
• Format: Printed on official company letterhead.
• Details: Explicitly state your full-time employment status and original start date.
• Authentication: Signed by your employer, with their full name clearly printed.
